My son has a 20 gauge Stephens that he bought 5+ years ago. Over the past few years he has started duck hunting and enjoys shooting doves. This year he has put in for a 12ga and is wanting a semi. Over the past few weeks he has been researching and has picked out a few different ones. The guns he is looking at are generally value line guns. I appreciate him wanting to get a deal and the best bang for the buck. My fear is buying him a $500-$600 shotgun and then in a couple of years he is wanting something new. I am a bang for the buck and want a good gun for the money. I am looking for recommendations. Im thinking <$1000 if possible.

The one I'm selling is under $1000.

Spend a few hundred more and get a better quality semi-auto.
The few dollars you save now will seem like nothing compared to a bad day in the field with an unreliable gun.

Can’t go wrong with a beretta

In that price range, the Beretta A300 would be my choice.

A good used Benelli M2 or a Montefeltro are also excellent choices.
A good used Browning Silver Field would be fine.
A new Franchi Affinity is in your price range.

The value line guns made in Turkey look great in the box, but after a few season of use, there can be problems.
Finding replacement parts and a gunsmith willing to work on them can be a challenge.

The few years we have in the field with our son, daughter, father or grandfather are too important to waste. Buy a brand and model with service and support.

Thats a goose gun!

In the clay target leagues, it is common to see Beretta A300 and A400 survive thousands of rounds each season with minimal care and maintenance.
Unless you travel internationally for dove, they will probably last a lifetime as a hunting gun.

Had a young man bring me an A400 with the complaint that is was short cycling. I asked when the last time he cleaned it internally and his response was the dealer told him it was self cleaning.
In fairness, it ran about 5 flats before any issue.
