SHTF and ..

No you won't. They all fail to safe. If the electrical grid collapses, if the computers crash, if aliuns invade; the control rods will drop, and the fission pile will just sit there for the next few thousand years slowly turning itself into various cobalt isotopes. Even the associated radioactives contaminated storage yards associated with most reactors will be fine for decades or centuries. Even if a reactor did run-away and melt down or blow like Chernobly or Fukisishima, the contamination was much less than the hysteria.

The nuck'ler weapons stockpiles require sophisticated control and arming systems to make them live and dangerous. Without anyone trained in arming and maintaining them, they are pretty much useless.

Look at Bill Nye over here!

That is like the worst possible insult you could give. You wound me sir! :p

Point being, short of a good old fashioned Global Thermonuclear War, radiation contamination is a couple of pages back on the threat list. Even if dickheads got themselves a bomb and set it off, odds are not likely you will be in the vicinity or the fallout trail of it.

What IS much more likely is a biological pandemic or chemical attack/accident/effect, and if you've got those covered, you've got most radiological concerns covered too.

They don't go boom. Can't. The most they can do is ooze toxic crud. In a SHTF scenario it will be under the background screams of the rest of our civilization going into the has been of history.

A nuclear plant in Kalifornia is already there. Broke down and shuttered because the idiots there can't/won't fix it. While they have brown outs because they can't meet power demands from the ENTIRE West coast power grid.

never said anything about a BOOM. I'm pretty sure everyone is aware. They can , however go all Chernobyl on ya ...

Yeah I know, but compared to all the (much less regulated/safe) chemical plants that are gonna go, the mass riots, the burning cities. No one is gonna notice a nuc plant cracking its dome or venting rads. And odds are, they aren't going to effect you.

Actually, none of the plants in the US can "go all Chernobyl". All of the current US reactors are water moderated which means that as the water gets hotter the reactions slow down. Add to that the rods on the bottom and you have a reactor that is not capable of going super-critical.
In the case of a melt-down, all you have is a giant pile of radioactive slag in the bottom of the containment chamber. No boom which means no loss of containment.
As James has already pointed out, nuke plants are not even close to the highest threat in a SHTF scenario.

As for you comment, "I don't trust the failsafes", the fail safes are inherent in the design of the plant. They are there and they will work, whether you believe in them or not.

Well now... I'll just have to take your word for it!
