So my employer dropped a 9 ton bomb on our butts today

Relocation benefits would apply. The salary already includes a 30% increase, but my boss told me they would likely add another 15% to that. We discussed it for some time, and everyone he knows out there rents. Cali is one of the few places it's cheaper to rent than to buy. And just for the hell of it, I looked at rent in Newport Beach area - it's almost neck and neck with what it would cost to live in Buckhead (for a comparable rental unit).

The killer in it all is the state income tax. Yikes! It's like double what GA's is.

I was raised in California and I have family that still live there both north and south. I did boot camp there and then I was stationed for 6yrs there.
Your boss nearly doubling your pay by giving you a 45% pay increase should raise the flag for you! This is just a guestimate so it may be more in fact. Unless you have a government job and moving to California will boost your retirement for your highest 3yrs of earnings then I wouldn't go. Do you have any guarantee that once you are there the company won't hand you a pink slip?

Have you researched the company you currently work for to see how stable they are now? Look at all angles and costs vs how difficult it would be for you find a comparable position with another company anywhere else in the United States where cost of living is not as high. I mean if you are willing to move now anyway then you may as well see if you can find a comparable job elsewhere or even one that pays more.

Yet another reason not to move to California. California micro stamping law.

Another one regarding your guns: You have to register all of them.

Firearms Information for New California Residents

  • Sell or transfer the firearm to a California licensed firearms dealer or to another individual using a California licensed firearms dealer to conduct the transaction; or
  • Sell or transfer the firearm to a California police or sheriff's department. Persons choosing this option should contact the law enforcement agency for instructions prior to transporting the firearm to the agency.
TRANSPORTING HANDGUNS
Any person transporting handguns into California is required under California law to transport those handguns unloaded and in a locked container other than the glove compartment or utility compartment of a vehicle.
ASSAULT WEAPONS
Please be advised that it is generally unlawful to bring assault weapons into California. Additionally, machine guns and ammunition feeding devices with the capacity to accept greater than 10 rounds may not be transported into California.
Failure to comply with California law could result in criminal prosecution (Pen. Code, § 27590

Ask Robin Williams. God rest his soul.
Are you implying that Robin Williams would have been better off had he not had so much money? How do you know that the treatment he was able to afford didn't keep him alive for as long as he was? Somehow I doubt being poor would have helped him. If anything I would have to say that the fame did more harm than the money.

will you be listing your guns and your balls for sale here soon? You won't be able to keep either when you move to Kalifornia. Do you really think you can get a CC in Cali? Really??

Orange Co issues permits to almost anyone with a clean background. It's just that the other counties don't honor an Orange Co permit. No going into Los Angeles County for me, I guess.

I'm just saying that money doesn't buy happiness.

It's a very solid company, and I've worked for them for 4 years. They just did a piss poor job of geographical staffing. But no, I wouldn't get a pink slip IF I go to CA. They have a hard time getting ANYONE to relocate to CA (wonder why:rolleyes:). I would have to stay for at least one year. But if I come back to GA, my pay would stay the same, and my bonuses/raises would be based on the increased Cali pay. Only down side is, if I don't stay for 2 years, they would only pay half of relo back to GA. But hell, it's a truck and a bunch of stuff I can fit in an enclosed 6x10.
