So my employer dropped a 9 ton bomb on our butts today

Lived and worked in San Fran during the inanet boom/bust. Be prepared for very high costs on a lot of things you might not guess. I'd ask for a relo and return relo in case things don't work out (+ you'll discover how valued you might or might not be). I hope you are getting a raise but without reference, couldn't say what you'd need to maintain a standard of living. I would not return to Cali, no way, no how.

Just for reference, we rented a 2 bedroom 1 bath house that was 875 sq ft. When we moved the owner decided to sell. They put the house on the market for $650k and it sold in two days for $690k. That was at the top of the market. I just looked up the house on Zillow and it's showing $527k. Newport Beach is quite a bit more expensive. Be sure you do a LOT of research before you decide whether or not you really want to move.

These calculators are notoriously bad for UNDERestimating the differences but here you go:
N metro Atlanta to Irvine, says a full FIFTY PERCENT increase would be needed to break even and remember, I can just about guarantee you that's a big underestimate. http://www.bankrate.com/calculators...6445&ef_id=VOTQ1wAAAcjmMwPT:20150218175357:s&
My sister lives in San Clemente. I don't have the heart to tell her what her million + home would sell for here (less than 1/3). But hey, she can "see the ocean". To each their own...

And there is a HUGE difference between Anaheim/Santa Ana and Irvine/Newport Beach. I know I would need to make at least twice as much to have a comparable lifestyle if I were to move back.

Ouch, that stinks... just don't go out there and become a "leftist" when do you find out for sure? and what kind of work do you do?

I won't know for sure for probably 3 months or so. If I go, relo benefits apply. I'll bring my Southern conservative attitude and maybe talk some sense into a few of them. Orange Co isn't so bad though. One of the few conservative counties in the state.
