Some things in life you should DIY

I’ve used a CPA for many many many years. I convinced a friend to at least try using my CPA. Their do it yourself.mistakes and overpayments were so much they were embarrassed. Never again did they do their own taxes.

The wife was paying a guy in town to do our taxes for a couple few years, all the while she was using some free site online to run her own numbers. Turns out she was getting the exact same amount back to the dollar that the guy in town was too. She's been doing them herself at home for the past few years now.

I used an accounting firm for several years. My taxes weren’t complicated, so maybe it was overkill? I had the state owing me a substantial return and they wrote a letter threatening to audit me. I called the accountant and informed him. He said drop off the letter to his office. He called me the next day and said I would get my return that week. And I did. The state was happy to try and bully me but they waffled immediately to a well-known accounting firm. I have had similar experiences when I had legal representation.

I have used a CPA since the 2nd year of our business. After the first time and all the headaches, I said never again. I take her a lot of different statements and information, and they take care of the rest. It might get easier since the wife is looking to retire and the business is in her name. However, I will still take them to the CPA with everything else we have going on. Being audit ready and getting some advice is worth it to me.
