Funny. I was out with some friends years ago and ordered what I considered to be a very nice whisky on the rocks. The bartender refused to serve it to me any way other than neat. "Why waste whisky with water?" he said.

I drank it neat, if for no other reason than to award what I am sure was his planned alliterative response.

Many places will serve whisky (or whiskey) along with a small glass of spring water and a straw. You're supposed to add one straw of the water to the whisky, to "wake up the flavor".
(To me, whiskey tastes like alcohol, so it's already awake.)
