Something That Has Been Bothering Me

letusbuyyourcar letusbuyyourcar speaks the truth. My dad started a screen printing business after retiring from Delta in the 90’s. Very profitable for 10 years then he sold it.
You can do this man!
I know the graphics guy at the Ink Spot in Warner Robins and another guy who owns Global Graphics down in Americus. Those are both bigger shops than us. So their overhead and payroll is much higher. Our shop is a three man show. We run pretty lean to keep expenses and prices down. I would venture to say that we're in the sweet spot as far as printing shops go. We do have a few really big orders every year like One Team which is the private company that handles most of the water treatment plants in GA and surrounding states. We used to do shirts for the National Fair but they got the big head and decided to "Do it online" . That was a **** show and we'll probably get it back.
Anyway heat pressing is huge now. As in transfers on translucent film using a heat press . Kinda like iron on **** was many years ago but much better quality now.
I guess the point here as that the difference between us and everyone else is that pretty much nothing is etched in stone and we can accommodate things other shops are too busy for .

I’m not looking to start a screen printing business, just to have my designs printed and to sell.
PM me and let me hook you up with David. He goes out of his way to get **** done for church members other churches and not to mention Houston Co Sheriff's Office. We print shirts for a charity they have called Arresting Hunger. I don't wanna commit to a price per shirt because that is far from my job. Kinda like when I was in the car bidness I learned real quick not to try to quote a payment to the customer. The finance man HATES that. But anyway I believe I can get basic one to two color shirts done for well under $20.00. Hell we print for the D bag Jeep Club events and leave enough room for them to make money on the deal.

I’m not ready to look into anything yet as it’s a big thing for me and I haven’t committed to it yet. The shop around me is around $10 for the shirt out the door for a Gildan 50/50 which I don’t feel is awful for low volume. At least that what they were in 2020 lol. I’ve never had an issue with them as I still have shirts that I’ve worn the crap out of from 2017 that still have ink on them like new. If I look into making it a business and need some help I will definitely contact you. I really do appreciate your willingness to help, it’s one of the reasons I love this site.

That's fine. One thing we never do is step on other shops toes. There's always enough work to go around. And stealing bidness is BAD bidness.
We use a LOT of Gildan shirts and you may already know that Gildan has a ton of different blends and product numbers. Some customers insist on Comfort Colors or Bella Canvas which are the most expensive ones. Comfort Colors have that prefaded look to them. But they're heavy cotton and dyed which makes them kinda hot to wear. Personally I dig the Gildan Heavy Cotton which is a basic shirt. There's plenty of shirts that feel better to the touch but you will sweat your ass off wearing them. So many variables...
Anyway if we can help you out we'll be glad to do it. Even if you just need the artwork separations done my other boss is pretty good at that.

Thanks! I like the port & co shirts as well but they are really high.

We print a good bit of Port brand shirts but most of it is for a promotional company called Radius. They have an account with Port and they bring the shirts. One of their big accounts is Shane's Ribs. BTW...I miss having a Shane's in Perry. That burger and fries okra was damn good. Anyway I don't remember if Port shirts are all cotton or a blend but I wear them a good bit because they breathe and I don't sweat my ass off in them.
We use shirts from Gildan called Next Level and another brand called District that LOOK much better than Port or basic Gildan but I can't keep them on for more than a few minutes this time of year. Same thing with Tultex. They make a nice looking and feeling shirt... until you put it on in the summer.
We have a dryer that kinda looks.like a pizza oven with a conveyor belt under it. That dryer runs at 670 degrees when we're printing. That's the only way to dry the ink. You can leave the buckets of ink open for years and it will never dry out. You have to get it over 650 degrees for it to dry. So even though we have an exhaust fan in the back wall pulling air through the building it's still over 100 degrees in the shop all day. They look at me crazy as hell but I cut the sleeves off of damn near every shirt I work in. You have to in order to get any air flow at all.
But enough rambling about the screen printing bidness. Starting to sound like David who will take each and every decent to hot looking woman on the grand tour of the shop and give them the entire history of the industry. It's kinda sad and funny at the same time.

Ha…like the first shirt I ever had printed up in 2017.

That’s a good lookin shirt, I would wear it for sure. T shirts are what I wear 99% of the time although I can’t wear black this time of year, I prefer white. I’d be interested in getting some if you decide to take the plunge, let me know, im always looking for a decent shirt and don’t like the big box store shirts. As far as the business thing, my dad put in business for myself at 17, didn’t have any idea it would last 45 years. Definitely the way to go! Good luck if you do!
