Son wants to go west for a hunt for Christmas

Mule deer hunt in ID. Tags are OTC in most areas and 90% of the state is public land. If you want to go on a cool whitetail hunt checkout public ground in the Midwest. Any of those hunts are going to cost you. Tags alone are going to be close to $1k.

Hunting out west isn't cheap any more. 3k will cover a basic DIY with under 5% odds of fulfilling your tags for big game (deer, elk, bear). Pay the extra 3k for a outfitter to improve your odds.

No more BLM land hunting for me out west. I'd rather wait and save up the extra money and go with a good guide on private land. Some of the locals do good out there on BLM land, but they live there and know places to get away from other people and some of the other outfitters that use that land for guided hunts also.

Exactly.

Haven’t been since 98 we went six times over ten years and I got 2 bulls. It was definitely beautiful as we were in mid Colorado ( gunnison ) area but real hit and miss. Don’t know the cost of tags now but was affordable when we were going. Good luck it’s a big area and can be a little intimidating but am experience to remember

Colorado was $996 + $80 habitat stamp, but its been knocked down to $700 + $80 habitat stamp since, you guessed it, people have stop coming dude to high cost/low success rate.

This definitely sounds like something I’m looking for. Y’all had any consistent kick up there?
You can get elk and mule deer tags over the counter. Watch out. The later hunts can snow you in. I hunted around Rifle some, where some Ga boys left a Ford Bronco in the National forest til the next spring. I bulldozed my way out of there once, stopping ever so often to get snow out of the grill.

I do not spend more than a $1500 for my DIY Wyoming hunts. That is out of state tag, my share of gas, my share of hotel, and my share of food. Use mostly my Army cold weather gear (retired). Probably spend another $500 on some type of "cool" boots or high speed stuff that I could live without. I have bought two rifles with scopes but again did not have to

I just moved back to GA from WA. I did some elk hunting out near Pullman but never had any luck. I saw several trophy deer though. Same as what everyone is saying about other places, not cheap.
