Splitting axe

It’s not about me splitting logs really, I might have to start the tougher pieces….but my son is going to get really good at it. Had one white oak dropped so far, two other big trees to go, this go round.
I got him to use a shovel awhile ago, it was embarrassing as hell, so any chance to get him on any tool. He’s also wrestling through until next season starts, so some chopping won’t hurt.

He sounds like a kid. He needs to be really careful. Safety first. Now that said, all my family ever did was split by hand. We also burned what ever wood was available. It's all really hard work, doesn't matter how you go about it. The wood splitter will work you to death because it's way faster than you are. You probably need 3 people to run a splitter. You can at least take your time by hand. I used to split wood every day when I got home from work. I use a double sided axe with a fiberglass handle. Takes up the vibration and last a lot longer too. You get a wood handle, you will break it at some point. I bought the fiber handle years ago and still goin strong. It's a Craftsman, which did have a lifetime warranty. Course, no good now I guess. Then you also want a wedge and a sledge hammer. 8lb sledge will work good. Probably should get that in a fiber handle as well. The kid is a green horn so investing in a heavy duty handle is likely a must. Otherwise, you'll be fixing them. Follow the grain of the wood for best results. Maybe look on Youtube. There is an art to work efficiently. And trust me, you want it as easy as possible. A second wedge isn't a bad idea either. That maul the member offered would be great, good on him. Some people do pretty good with one. Never did much for me. But the maul can be used like a wedge or as a axe, sort of

I bought a splitting mall about 25 years ago at Home Depot used for several years and bought gas powered hydraulic spitter if splitting a lot of wood I use it but if just a couple loader buckets full still use hand splitter for exercise.

split your own wood. it'll warm you up a couple of times. When you cut it into sections, when you split it, when you stack it, when you move the stack closer to the house, etc. etc.

Gotta say last time I had a bunch to split (2 trees fell during storms) I borrowed a friends hydraulic splitter. some of the crap wood would have been the undoing of me, but the powered one just hammered through anything I put on the thing.

Interesting reading. I will say my father taught me well, and I will be teaching my son well.

It does make me smile the complaints about sweetgum. Not to walk both ways to school uphill, 5 miles through the snow in a blizzard, but, being Australian, gum trees is all we ever had. My father especially loved it when he got his hands on Red Ironbark for me to split as it was his favorite to burn. Lots of heat and a slow burn, less popping and spitting in then other gumtrees as well. One of the hardest woods in the world, nightmare to split.
The firewood over here is amazing, I love it.
