Interesting reading. I will say my father taught me well, and I will be teaching my son well.He sounds like a kid. He needs to be really careful. Safety first. Now that said, all my family ever did was split by hand. We also burned what ever wood was available. It's all really hard work, doesn't matter how you go about it. The wood splitter will work you to death because it's way faster than you are. You probably need 3 people to run a splitter. You can at least take your time by hand. I used to split wood every day when I got home from work. I use a double sided axe with a fiberglass handle. Takes up the vibration and last a lot longer too. You get a wood handle, you will break it at some point. I bought the fiber handle years ago and still goin strong. It's a Craftsman, which did have a lifetime warranty. Course, no good now I guess. Then you also want a wedge and a sledge hammer. 8lb sledge will work good. Probably should get that in a fiber handle as well. The kid is a green horn so investing in a heavy duty handle is likely a must. Otherwise, you'll be fixing them. Follow the grain of the wood for best results. Maybe look on Youtube. There is an art to work efficiently. And trust me, you want it as easy as possible. A second wedge isn't a bad idea either. That maul the member offered would be great, good on him. Some people do pretty good with one. Never did much for me. But the maul can be used like a wedge or as a axe, sort of
