Sporterize a mosin or go with something else?

I was nervous about buying a Mosin because of the corrosive ammo until I learned that the "solvent" needed is Windex with ammonia. Spray the bore with Windex. Mop it, then it's the usual Hoppes and Rem oil routine. I would suggest a good recoil pad. They bite a little more than an AR. Going to get the archangel stock and modernize mine soon.

Commercial Windex contains Ammonia Hydroxide, basically watered-down ammonia. Windex is mostly water and Isopropyl alcohol, not sure it's worth the price when hot water works just as well.

I've read that a water & Ballistol mix works best: when the water evaporates the Ballistol is left behind and helps prevent rust.

I'm considering selling my Mosin if you're interested. It's a nice shooter and this center balance stock is realy nice. It is a bit funky looking and definitely not for everyone.

By the time you're done w/ the Mosen you will probably have more $ wrapped up in it than if you bought Savage 110 or a Remington 700. Plus there will not be any needed machining to mount a scope. If you still want a project gun, find a model 95 or 98 Mauser.

Your money, your toy. Pic#1 looks like a stock MN with a thumbhole and cleaned up front. Unless you use an LER scope and mount, you need a bent bolt and tapping the receiver. Had many, teched many and sold them all. Only one now is a Savage 110 in 243. 7mm-08 or .308 is more than enough. Unless you are shooting elk or bear, will kill everything else in GA.

I've "finalized" a mosin that shoots wonderful for anything below 350 yards, and the ammo is so cheap that i can shoot it as much as i feel like. I get about 1-3/4" groups at 175 yds....someone who knows how to shoot well could probably do a little better than that with it (but i won't let 'em!). FMJ, AP, soft point, tracer, and incendiary rounds are readily available. Sure is satisfying to outshoot most folks with a 70 year old battle rifle that doesnt look like everything else on the range. And there's nothing like that mosin fire ball at dusk!

No matter which way you decide to go, there'll be haters and also people who like it and wish they had one too. When its all said and done, buy what makes YOU happy...and shoot the crap out of it.
