Starting a bonfire for rookies...

When I was married my FIL owned a range and we'd burn trash in the barrels on Sundays. Sometimes we'd use a little gasoline as a starter. I asked my brother to put some in the burn barrel and he said he would. I go to light the trash and all I remember is falling backwards and seeing my left and right arms on fire, and wondering how all the burning trash got 30 feet into that air. The jackass decided to substitute Coleman lantern fuel for gasoline. Hot humid day, fumes built up in the barrel, turned it in to a trash mortar. LOL.
Re-enactment next Range Day?:peep:

I light bonfires with a lot of gas, but I soak 3 baton-sized wood sticks in a cup of gas, and I light those while 30 feet away and toss them, one at a time, onto the woodpile.
Sometimes the first one blows out during the toss, so I have 2 more backups ready to throw.

30 feet is close enough to feel the blast wave and radiated heat, but not enough to catch you on fire.
