Ok- I thought we used to have a muzzle loading forum, but I'll drop this here (mods, move as required).

I had the chance to shoot a gentleman's flintlock rifle at the range today. That thing was awesome. It was a 50 cal that he built from a kit. I've done a little google research and found that the kits seem to cost more than some bolt actions.

Anyone here ever built a flintlock or percussion rifle from a kit (or dare I ask from wood and metal)? I'd guess that I'll give one a try in the next few months. Any suggestions on kits or good places to order the parts would be very much appreciated.

I'll say that this is one of the few firearms that I've seen that really requires a tool box at the range. The gentleman with his rifle had a handful of tools to measure powder, a knife to cut the patch, powder horn, bullet horn, start the ball, and another rod to seat the ball in the bore. And of course a bunch of spare napped flints, cleaning kit, and something to clean the flash pan/hole in the barrel.

A good start would be to go to Track of the Wolf website & get one of their catalogs (if they still print them!). Another decent one is Dixie Gun Works, but their parts & kits were priced pretty high the last time I checked. There are a few other suppliers, but those will get you started.

Oh, and I still have an *old* T/C Hawken flintlock kit I work on when I have the time, but it's been sitting dormant the last few years, so I don't feel qualified in giving you any good pointers.

I appreciate the info! I will check out those two manufacturers. For that matter, I think I remember seeing Dixie Gun on the top of the barrel this afternoon.
