There's a bill to abolish the state income tax in Georgia. Write your STATE rep, STATE senator, and Governor Deal and tell them to support. Seven states already have no income tax and two have a limited income tax (interest and dividends only). Two of the nine border our state. Two of those are the 14th and 20th largest economies IN THE WORLD as a result. It's revenue neutral legislation which means that the state takes in the SAME AMOUNT of revenue.
It then puts you in control of how much tax you pay based on how much you buy. Pay a few HUNDRED more in sales tax, while paying a few THOUSAND less in income tax. Now all we have to do is shut up all the people who like to whine about how a proposal is unlikely, or why there may be some kinks, or that we should just accept "the way things are" because they are scared of trying something new. It is a 12-year gradual transition anyway so even if there are some kinks we'll have a LONG time to work them out. It's time the bottom 47% go from paying ZERO taxes to paying SOMETHING for the government services that the rest of us pay for. Also a way to get tourists, tax evaders, and illegal alien invaders to reduce the burden on the rest of us, by creating an inescapable means of getting them to pay. You can evade taxes on an income based system, but it's hard to do in a sales tax system. In a sales tax based system, you have two people involved in a transaction that would have to agree to evade, whereas it's only ONE person who evades in an income tax system. On top of that there's hardly any business today that isn't set up on a computerized system that compounds the difficulty of evasion. Some suggest that people will just buy their goods elsewhere, which is preposterous, because people can already escape sales tax by buying online and our state does just fine. There is a reason that FL and TX are in the 20 largest economies in the WORLD. Many affluent will move here just like they did FL. With them comes jobs. The rich also buy a LOT of stuff which results in more economic stimulation and tax revenue. Some people will have to not think of just how it affects themselves in order to advance such a proposal. Some people like to poke holes in ideas, half because it's cool, the other half are not clever enough to come up with their own.

Georgia schools and state Universities are already in a shambles...this won't help. Decent leadership and tax dollars are a start.

Oh I love the idea of the "fair tax" but I never see it happening. That puts the power in the peoples hands(refuse to buy when you are not happy with what the gov is doing) and we no the government loathes that idea.

States need a certain amount of money to run the government. They get this money through taxes. Should state income taxes be abolished, don't expect the government to cut the budget. Rather, look for other taxes and fees to be increased to make up for the shortfall.

If they only want to raise sales taxes to make up the difference then I'd make out pretty well. Of course, I save/invest about 30% of my income. I guess the people who can't afford to do that would be the ones paying the gap? So it would probably mean a net increase in taxes paid to the state by the families living paycheck to paycheck trying to get by right?

Florida manages fine without income tax.
