Tags under profile

i am a newbie here, and this may be a dumb question to some.
Trying to understand the tag options under my profile. Seeing if anyine could explain a tad bit on what it is used for.
I know the reasoning on a post, but not sure if it is the same for a profile.
Any feedback would be grately appreciated. I am a newbie here so please be kind. Thanks for your time.
