Teaching son to drive a manual transmission

My dad taught me on the side of a mountain in CO. I almost killed us but it motivated me to learn. In the end I just learned the basics then having my dad get OUT of the car helped.

I worked with him for a few starts then got out of the car. After he realized he didn't know everything I drove and showed him what I was doing. Then I let him drive again, made some suggestions then got out.

i learnt how to drive in a 74 one ton ford truck when i was 14 , these new fluid drive clutches are a walk in the park , he should get it in a few days

Bring him over and I'll stick him in an IH with a non-sync 7 speed. He'll have to get use to the engine RPM by sound, then that little 5 speed won't be nothing.

I'll tell you how I learned. My friend and I had a trip planned to Windrock to do some ATV'n. After a night of drinking we made the decision to leave at 5am....(we stopped drinking at 2am). When we woke to leave he told me I would have to drive since he was still plastered.....I was not in the best shape either(I was young and very stupid). After telling him I didn't know how to drive a stick he said, you will learn. He had a Toyota Tacoma on a 3 inch lift, we were pulling a 5x8 trailer with 2 4-wheelers on the back and one in the back of the truck. I can't tell you how many times I killed it and how bad the clutch smelled like a scorched burning wildfire.

When we got there finally, due to the constant stalling and bouncing from my terrible driving the 4 wheeler had slick halfway out of the back of the truck bed and was hanging by a single tie-down.

That's how I learned and he drove back.

My only advice is to teach him how to drive first on an automatic if possible. I taught my niece how to drive a stick after she had been driving a little while, and it was actually pretty easy. 30 minutes in a large parking lot...and she drove it home.

I learned "4 on the floors" in a '60 VW when I was 13. Learned "three on the tree" next in a '61 Falcon station wagon. The day I got my DL I like to have never got used to the Muncie 4-speed, clutch you almost had to use both feet on, 365 HP 327 '62 Nova my brother had. Start out with the low HP's and work up. I was speed shifting and controling wheel spin in no time.
My wife had to learn manuals when she started driving, and we made sure both our son and daughter could, too.
