I commented recently on a thread about a gentlemen's Mom looking for a firearm. It was mentioned that his Mom liked shooting the Ruger SR22 but it was not considered a "carry gun". Not wanting to hijack the thread I decided to start my own.
The Ruger SR22 is an awesome 22 pistol and is also a very adequate and dependable carry gun. This firearm is well built, rugged, has interchangeable grips, nice adjustable 3 dot sights, and ambi controls. I think the main problem lies in the thought that 22lr is not an acceptable carry piece. Well I beg to differ. Carrying a 22lr firearm as a primary carry weapon is just as good as carrying anything else you choose; be it 9mm, 40, 45 etc. There are a lot of people out there, hopefully just a few youngins here that think a 22lr can not get the job done. You need to do some research. You need to talk to some firearm professionals, some medical professionals, etc. It's not necessarily the size of the projectile. It's all about "shot placement". 22lr muzzle velocity can run in the same family as a 45, 9 and sometimes even 40 cal. 40 grains of a foreign body in your body is no joke. I have a personal friend and a member at work who is the lead ER trauma surgeon at one of our local hospitals. He told me every time they have a GSW coming in, they pray it is not a 22lr. Big projectiles either go clean in and out, or in small, out big. A 22lr entering the body just has to touch anything, such as a bone, or even a muscle, and the 40 grain projectile turns into multiple tiny teeny projectiles, that like to puncture and perforate everything around it.
I just feel very strongly that even a 22lr can be deadly if used correctly. I hear people all the time at work and sometimes in forums dismiss the 22lr as just a fun thing to shoot or plink. One of the things I always stress in my safety classes is that a 22lr is not a "kids gun" that we so easily hear a lot in firearms conversations.
So.....what is your opinion or take on 22lr??
