The Streamlight Battery Adventure...

in all seriousness, what application is strobe intended for on tactical/mounted lights?

When strobes first became A Thing, we tried them on my SWAT Team. Used them in quite a bit of force-on-force training and a few real entries. What we found was that strobes made it very difficult for the user to ID details, especially when the threat was moving. Details like “WHAT is that object in his hand?”, and “Which of those two running is the guy we’re after?”

On the flip side, we didn’t find the strobes to be any more particularly debilitating to the bad guy than a really bright light used properly.

At the end of the day, we passed on strobes, as have I since then. I’ve revisited them here and there over the years, but haven’t seen anything to change my mind.

makes sense. I have not found a practical use either. I'm not swat, but didnt know if I was missing something.

that is incorrect.
batteries are not batteries with stream light. They have their own 18650s with different connections.
That is the 18650 for my hlx and headlamps next to a 18650 vape battery. The stream light 18650s are a bit longer and button is different.

Thats great info, thanks for clearing it up!
I am under the assumption that as long as a light uses springs at the head and tail then the button top or flat top, or other top issue becomes irrelevant, as long as it fits. All 18650 batteries come protected or unprotected, with protected having extra circuitry and bing a bit bigger.

The right side battery that you have pictured, for instance, works in a Streamlight HL-X rail mount but NOT in the handhedl version of the HL-X or HL-2. That was what I ran into initially, i did my testing with the HLX Rail mount, the Cloud Defensive batteries worked, so I thought it could all be interchangeable and I'd live happily ever after :)
Now we're here, hah.

well you just taught me something. That is some bs.
I do not have any of the hlx mounted light. I have trl mounted lights.
I have tried to find a way around the cr battery and use rechargeable batteries that interchange with other brands but its basically not gonna happen. I will put my handheld hlx and headlamps up next to any light, though. To me it is still best light for 100 bucks. Battery and charger are roughly 40 extra but work in my headlamps as well. I made sure to read the package on that one.

Solder blob your flat top batteries if the light you are trying to use requires a button top 18650. You also need to look for which lights have low voltage protection. Your owl probably can't use protected 18650s because it'll trip the protection circuit in your battery. I think the owl runs on a Samsung 30q. In my HL-X lights I use protected button top 18650 bc I think it also doesn't have low voltage protection. Check out mtnelectronics.com for any good reliable brand and non counterfeit 18650 batteries. In your other lights that require 2xcr123 you can typically run a 16650 battery as well.
