The U.S. Air Force has completed a re-winging effort for 173 A-10 Warthogattack aircraft that began nearly a decade ago.
As part of the $1.1 billion "Enhanced Wing Assembly" contract awarded to Boeing Co. in 2007, the Ogden Air Logistics Complex at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, recently completed work on the last A-10 slated to receive the upgrade, the service said in a news release Monday. The effort began in 2011.
The new wings will give the A-10s a longer life span. They are expected "to last for up to 10,000 equivalent flight hours without a depot inspection," which should take them well into the 2030s, according to the release.

One of my favorite planes. I think the speed and armaments and maneuverability of this plane puts it up there. Reliability is surely high for the number of years this thing has been in service. Yep, one heck of an aircraft.

Saw one at a museum years ago. Always wanted to hear one. I've read that they have a distinctive sound. I've also read that they could be nearly shot to pieces and pilots could still bring them in under control.

I remember hearing fedon First Gulf War the enemy tanks would hear a warthog coming and they would just get out of the tank and put their hands up. If I'm not mistaken they can take 16 bombs. It's the very definition of badass

The airframe was built around the awesome gun. Almost every major component was designed with a redundant system. Two engines, two hydraulic systems, two vertical stabilizers....pilot sits in a titanium bathtub of armor.

It was thought to be obsolete only so many years after its introduction. Fairchild Republic did a nice job with this one...great to see her still serving and earning her keep!
