I've always used a Bic or Gillette Sensor 2-3 blade razor but I recently got interested in going to a double edge(safety) razor system. I've ordered a couple of lesser priced ones on Amazon and some blades. Want to get the feel for it then maybe look for a nice antique razor or more expensive contemporary one.

Anyone have any experience, preferences or just advice on shaving this way?

I use the gilette now as well. In to see what you think about shaving with them once you use em.

I use a couple of old safety razors that belonged to my great grandfather. I just ordered some sample blades from amazon to see if there are some better ones out there. Now I want to find some good shaving soap/cream, the best I've used so far has been from walmart. Tried a more expensive brand a couple weeks ago and it sucked big time. Dried out on my face before I could finish the shave. I'm convinced that the safety razor is better than the newer multi blade stuff, no comparison. Google it and there are a lot of sites out there with good info.

I don't think I'll ever stray from the Gillette Mach 3. I've tried other razors, the 4 and 5 blade. They are no better than the Mach 3. I'm sure you can get a damn good close shave with the safety razor, but I think it will also cut the hell out of you as well. Shaving in the shower with the Mach 3 does a great job. I buy the large packs of refills at Sam's club. Kind of high, but they last a long time.

I thought the same about the cuts until I tried it and got used to the different technique, I rarely if ever have a nick as long as I use good shave soap/cream.
