They both work fine but you will definitely notice a softer, smoother application with the badger hair (as well as less soap). If you are making an initial purchase I would go badger. LOL More of a "first world" comfort. I save my boars hair brushes in my go kit.
Oh and don't buy Merkur blades the ones at the drug store are better in most folks opinion that use safety razors. (and cheaper)
I would find some good blades at CVS and keep those bad boys. They never wear out, just clean them up and roll. If they are the right kind the value goes up.

WOW! Are ya kidding me? Talk about easy and comfortable.
I got impatient waiting for my razors to come in so I stopped in WalMart and bought one of the MicroTouch sets that Rick Harrison advertises for. I also wanted to look at shaving soap. Found 4 pucks of soap on clearance so I grabbed them all at a buck each in case it becomes hard to find. Took the kit home, used a washcloth to warm and wet the stubble from Saturday mornings shave and lathered up. The new soap is almost completely odorless and gives a nice, creamy lather, but does seem to dry out faster than my first puck. No problem, gave me an excuse to rewarm and rewet it.
I have watched a video on DE shaving and the guy mentioned that you should be able to hear the shave but not feel it. He is right, There was no "tug" or pulling at all, just a smooth, glide and a slight raspy sound. I had problems at the chin. Getting a smooth shave on the curve required several passes and more confidence than I started out with. But as I grew comfortable with it, things progressed well. I completed the shave without a single nick and not a trace of razor burn. VERY happy. Especially since this was a shave after returning home from most of the morning out of the house. Looking forward to tomorrows shower shave.
Oh! While typing this my mail came and my "vintage" 3 piece gold tone Gillette was delivered. Will be shaving with it tomorrow.![]()

Well, day 2. Even better than day 1. Shaved in the shower so had the full steam effect. Used my vintage Gillette 3 piece. Started out so smooth I thought I had the wrong angle and wasn't actually cutting. But it was. Just a very smooth, comfortable shave. Used the Williams soap and got a wetter, but thinner lather. Still lubricated super and made for a great shave. Wife solved the chin curve issue by filing a request in triplicate for the return of the goatee.
Still no blood in evidence and the aftershave seems less aggressive than with the multi-blade cartridge razors.
I guess I am officially hooked.
