This day, 1983

Take a moment to remember the Marines, Soldiers and Sailors that died this day in Beirut, Lebanon. Along with the Embassy attack, it was the beginning of the terror attacks the world endures today. God Bless America, God Bless the Marine Corps.
God bless all of those heroic souls. Lives ended tragically.

It was a Sunday morning. I’ve never forgotten.

The biggest single day loss of Marines since Iwo Jima in WWII.
2 simple truck bombs loaded w TNT explosives and over 300 dead and another 150 wounded.

I remember wondering why the gate sentries could not have fired off enough rounds to stop the trucks advance?

Finding out later the Marines had empty weapons, allowed to only keep a loaded mag/bolt closed/ empty chamber while on duty at front gate.

By the time only 1 of them got a round chambered, he reportedly got off only 1 round fired at truck before it crashed thru chain link fencing and into the barracks building exploding.

I hope our country learned from that and keep a belt fed .50 mounted at every gate. But. We probably still repeating same mistakes.
I remove my hat to my heart to ALL brave fallen service members, Wherever they may lay.
