[FONT=Arial,geneva,helvetica]Mark Andrews [/FONT] [FONT=Arial,geneva,helvetica]Dana Davis, who serves as Georgia Highlands College’s director of college relations, confirmed to The Daily Tribune News on Wednesday there have been complaints filed regarding three members of the college’s Office of Campus Safety. The matter now is being handled by the University System of Georgia.[/FONT] [FONT=Arial,geneva,helvetica]“[The matter] is still under investigation, but with the University System [Ethics & Compliance Program],” Davis said. “... I think we have done exactly what we are supposed to do according to what our policies are, but it is under investigation and [the USG] is sorting through it.”[/FONT]
[FONT=Arial,geneva,helvetica] An anonymous letter mailed to The Daily Tribune News dated Dec. 9 alleges two members of the college’s Office of Campus Safety manipulated their timecards at the financial expense of the state as well as used the college’s safety vehicle for personal use. The letter also alleges one of the office members brings a personal handgun to work and “regularly fires his weapon in the north parking lot of [the] campus, even though officers are not permitted to carry firearms while on duty ... .” According to www.[B]highlands[/B].edu, the college has professional safety officers on duty during normal operating hours at each campus location. “These officers provide physical security, fire protection and prevention, emergency first aid, safety programs and inspections, and investigate and enforce violations of the Code of Student Conduct and criminal offenses on GHC property,” the website states. It also states, “... Georgia Highlands College prohibits all persons who enter the college property from carrying a handgun, firearm, or prohibited weapon of any kind onto the property regardless of whether the person is licensed to carry the weapon or not. The only exceptions to this policy are police officers, security guards, or other law enforcement persons who are on duty and performing in an official capacity.” Wesley Horne, director of Ethics & Compliance for USG, confirmed the office is conducting an investigation regarding the three employees named in the letter, whose names are being withheld from publication until GHC or USG confirms the subjects’ identity. “I cannot [comment] - it’s an ongoing investigation,” Horne said, adding he could not provide information on when the investigation is slated to be complete.
