Time to trade in your 1911s?

I have a Kimber custom shop that my wife bought me about 20 years ago and it's been a champ man... a couple of failures over who knows how many rounds (my Glocks, etc. have AT least that many failures) so I don't know? Maybe it's just clueless owners that treat 1911s like Glocks (never clean, etc)?

My mimber had issues. Issues were resolved by tensioning the extractor and replacing the recoil spring. 200 rounds later with no issues. Traded her off but damn I miss it.

Maybe I have just been lucky? Never had any of my 1911's give me an issue. Recon I'll just keep em.

When my 1911 has it's first failure I'll let you know. Only stoppages I've ever had is because I forgot to put my booster in my suppressor once. I've even been thrown into sand with it and it continued to function. That includes steel case, fmj, and hollow points too.

I'm right there with ya. I'm rounding the bend to 2k rounds through my RIA and I've still never had a failure of any kind.

As soon as I have a failure, I'll let you guys know.

Anecdotal accounts of 1911s being unreliable have kept me from owning one. I think it's fine to have one for your collection but I wouldn't use one for defense.

perhaps you should go get a quality 1911 and see for yourself......

If you enjoy the craftsmanship of a finely built 1911 or you enjoy tinkering on your own, by all means continue to enjoy them. However, if training, shooting, and performance is your primary goal and you lack the resources, time, patience, or knowledge to keep after a 1911, then be realistic and choose something more modern.

I copied that exact quote and was about to post it...I think that is spot on. 1911's are not for everybody. Unfortunately people who don't know how to properly maintain their 1911's and treat them like modern polymer guns often have malfunctions and that's all you hear about. I have a Kimber TLE II that literally has had over 10,000 rounds through it and never had one malfunction. I have also had a few 1911's that needed some minor tuning. Once they were tuned up they ran like a top.
