I copied that exact quote and was about to post it...I think that is spot on. 1911's are not for everybody. Unfortunately people who don't know how to properly maintain their 1911's and treat them like modern polymer guns often have malfunctions and that's all you hear about. I have a Kimber TLE II that literally has had over 10,000 rounds through it and never had one malfunction. I have also had a few 1911's that needed some minor tuning. Once they were tuned up they ran like a top.

I've heard the phrase, a 1911 is like a Formula 1 car, a (insert polywunder pistol here) is like a Toyota Camry. It may not be the best simile ever but it makes the point. If I was outfitting a department, I'd go with a polymer pistol in a heartbeat.

I carry a 1911 every single day.
It isnt even a "nice" 1911. It is a Rock Island 4" 1911. I trust my life to it (obviously)

I dont think there is ever a time to trade in your 1911's. however if you disagree and think it may be a dangerous platform, by all means, send it to me for proper disposal... you know, for the children. :fangers:

And yet somehow this country fought two World Wars and several other little "dust ups" with the old ragged Colt 1911 and kicked a lot of ass.
The 1911 "reliability" concerns mainly come from the ultra tight show guns with minimal tolerances, wacky guide rods and jacked up mags.

I agree. I certainly wouldn't want to be the armorer for a department that carries the 1911. However, I don't have a problem keeping my personal 1911's running properly.

I don't know... I haven't had any issues with my past 1911s. They've eaten everything I fed them. Plus I carry one. Some tactical article won't persuade me otherwise.

I don't think I could ever carry a 1911 as a primary again. I'm just more confident with my Glocks than I ever will be with a 1911. I would trust just about any modern polymer pistol over a 1911, high end or low end. If i want all metal, I'd go to the Sig P22x series.

I've participated in many competitions and classes over the years and the only guns I see that go down on a regular basis are 1911's. Now, that said, the average defensive shooting rarely uses more than 3 rounds, so you probably don't need your gun to shoot numerous mags worth reliably.


...blah blah blah.... I still carry a Glock 17. I've carried it on duty, off duty, through the woods, mud and dirt and it has over 15,000 rounds through it without failure.

It wasn't designed to persuade you otherwise....in fact what you say fits in line perfectly with the gist of the article.

never had a reliability issue with a 1911, but i prefer stock. seems a lot of guys like to monkey around with them, then they don't work. leave that to someone that knows what they're doing.
