Time to trade in your 1911s?

I have had 1911s with problems and I have had 1911s with no problems (most no probelems). The same goes for non-1911 semi autos. Either way, I would never give up on the 1911. I love the way they shoot! I dont carry 1911s because I prefer pocket guns or other light guns. But there is simply no pistol better to shoot at the range than a 1911 -- IMO.

While I admit that modern polymer pistols have many advantages over 1911s, to me it is telling that the marines are returning to the 1911 platform. For many reasons, the military likes to stipulate active safeties....making pistols such as glock immediately ineligible. The military also likes metal frame pistols, probably for the durability (perceived or real, it doesn't matter), this is why pistols like the beretta m9 and the sigs come into play. Since the military is barred from using hollow point ammo because of the stupid Hague convention, there is a ample evidence that hardball 9mm is ineffective in quickly stopping combatants over the last few desert wars.

Most people can agree that with modern defense ammo, there are minimal differences between 9mm and .45acp....but you will not convince me that .45 hardball isn't superior to 9mm hardball. Now using all of what I've mentioned, list all of the metal framed service guns with active and passive safeties and are chambered for .45.....not a whole heck of a lot of models thst people argue against 1911s with. Oh there are the HK and FNH models that fit the bill but usually require someone with bear pas hands to hold comfortably. Remember that the military has to equip folks of all shapes and sizes.

All that to say that the 1911 platform has an undeniable track record and remains an extremely effective fighting gun for the 21st century. Now for everyone who can use hollow points and isn't arming themselves to fight doped up insurgents....quit your *****ing and carry whatever you shoot best. I love my 1911 but I carry my Kahr and glock daily. I'm not a soldier, I'm a civilian like most of you who has different needs.

End rant.

Good post. I don't know of any metal framed HKs though. The USP45, HK45, HK45c, and MK 23 are all polymer. Otherwise, they fit the bill.

Ding ding ding.

I also feel the need to state that there is definitely some bs going on with the government selecting the colt 1911 option which will cost north of $5000 per 1911. This is making the assumption that there is not more than $600 in spare parts or additional tools needed since they have serviced this pistol before in the past. There will probably be reports of not enough capacity as well. Someone will always find something to complain about.

Curious why not go with the 10mm instead of the 45? Same capacity with a more powerful round. These are also the cream of the crop from the marines and as such I doubt the added recoil would be an issue.

guess i'm old school, but i love a 1911. also love a good revolver and a glock 19. but like any gun, i make sure its reliable before i trust it. using a compact 1911 now. absolutely reliable. but i like guns in general.

Thanks for the catch albatross....your right, the HKs are polymer frames. That makes my point even more relevant, there really isn't a viable alternative to the 1911 with regards to a .45 service pistol that seems to meet the miltary's requirements.

A 9mm round MAY expand. A .45 round will never shrink.

Ding, ding, ding back at you...

LOL. Millions of dollars poured into research and real life doesnt mean anything here. Move along folks.

Capacity better follow up shots greater velocity. Those mean nothing to you. Ok got it.

Your decades of real experience is showing clearly, I bow to your greatness.

By the way, starting any sentence with LOL is a great way to show you deserve respect and admiration for your opinions...

Yeah, maybe a Sig P220?

*Edit, I guess the P220 doesn't have a manual safety, scratch that....

You ignore real world results. I'm not bashing the 45 or anyone who uses it simply stating that with the advance of time and technology the gap in performance between the two has been rendered null and void.

You replying to a statement of mine mocking me "Ding ding ding" is a great way to command respect as well. Perhaps it is I who should be bowing to you?
