The 1911 in the G.I. version with 230 grain FMJ has proven itself, more than once. With the introduction of hollow point ammo (Geneva convention no no) the feed ramp/browning link had its shortcomings. In mil spec form a combat accurate gun is had but more is better, right? To tighten groups, tolerances were reduced and with tighter tolerances, so was reduced reliability.
I would (have/still) carry a 1911 with 230 grain ball and have a latitude of flexibility and not feel poorly armed with a handgun. However, I carry 9mm not from a capacity or performance advantage as my 9mm really has none (Kahr CW 9mm). What it does offer is concealment and comfort, both critical issues to me in carrying everywhere legal.
I do maintain a G36 in the POV, JHP's in the tube/mag and spare with FMJ.
