To 80% or not to 80%?

We both know the answer to that and the OP will soon enough. So yeah, I actually did kind of intentionally ignore that part of the post. If he actually winds up tooling up and building an AK, then he's one of the few to follow through...we will see...
The rifle to rifle cost could sway either direction depending on your taste...but a good reliable AK won't be cheap for the time being...not sure when costs would come down.
Surplus AK mags are the cheapest reliable mags you can get IMO. $15 a piece and up. AR PMAGS are still available for around $10 I believe?
If you think the agency you're worried about doesn't track the parts needed to build out the lower then you're fooling yourself. If you use the internet for anything related to weapons then they've already got your info. Even using VPN and other attempts to remain off the radar are really just a joke if they really want you. Good luck though. AR's are easier to build.
Hypothetically, lets say the government forces registration. I will follow the law and register all the firearms that I own.
Unfortunately, there are a number of firearms that I purchased new or with some other kind of traceability that I no longer own. I may get asked by the gov't to give some kind of explanation as to why I didn't register them. My only honest option will be to state that I believe I sold those either on the ODT or I sold them at a gunshow. I won't have any paperwork (no BOS's) to back that up, but that was not required at the time of sale. My vague recollection will be all I have to offer on their whereabouts. They may be able to track down some by going through ODT private message records, but those gun shows are going to be problematic.
If you buy an 80% lower and everything needed to finish it... and then you finish it, you're not allowed to sell it. Ever. If it comes time to register, and we go full tinfoil where the gov't uses their internet tracking to find people that didn't register, I'd expect people that purchased 80% lowers to get some tough to answer questions.

I never understood the whole "not letting the government know" about a gun... F em' If they want you they'll get you. pretending like a gun doesnt exist or saying its lost "in a boating accident" kind of defeats the purpose of the 2nd amendment. lol only reason hiding will do you any good is if you arent "allowed" to own it in the first place. that's neither here nor there. Tyranny doesn't end at "I lost it at the lake".

AR 80% aren't really worth the money at the moment but if you ABSOLUTELY need to not buy a $50 aero lower and fill out a 4473 form and play bin laden in your secret lair and nord vpn then the AR is easy...tip to butt. But like others have said dont count on your privacy being held when the ATF raids another 80% company and the company hands over their sales records.

For your first build, just get a PSA, Aero, or Poverty Pony lower and build a gun. That way you can sell or trade it when you want to move on.
As mentioned, the Feds are going to know anyway. The idea of just one registered part is so 20th century anyway, today everything is logged, categorized and data based anyway.

The easy answer is non-compliance...why are people so willing to bend over? New Zealand had massive non compliance after their semi-auto ban... please hand them over to someone that will use them before registering to tyrannical government other wise you'll be handing them over to them instead.
NY had about 4% compliance when they were required to register (SAFE act). I didn't hear about any raids on people that didn't comply.
Really, they know there will be massive non-compliance. The goal will be to make things more difficult in the long run. It took 100yrs for England to get like it is now. We're not there so just buy what you want now.
If you want to maximize your privacy and be anonymous while building an 80% gun frame into a working firearm you'd better acquire the frame and all of your component parts anonymously --paying by cash.

As much as I like ODT, I would say maximizing your privacy would also mean not responding to ads you see here. However, attending a "meet an' greet" and negotiating your deals, verbally, ought to work.
