To those of you that have been layed off or just fired.......

circle the wagons and do your best is all you can do. if you have extra guns tools etc, sell them. see if somehow you can use those awesome woodworking skillls. anything you can to make it. don't be too proud. its a matter of survival and doing what you must. but hold your head up. a lot of people are in this position right now. every dog has his day. good luck.

Wife got layed off from pfizer 2 weeks ago and was looking forward to a break.
Last week Monster.com offered her a job making the same money + bonus .
The funny thing is she did not go looking for it they came to here.
Hang in their and maby try getting a CDL and haul local,
use all your tools ie 401k stock's what ever.

I agree with all of these. I have been there got laid-off twice in three years. And my head is still high and I have to just keeping on looking. We know what you are going through. I have a great family and a awesome girlfriend as long as you have your family you will be ok. And if you find a job let me know I need a job too. And if anyone have any leads to jobs let put them up on the forum...

Everyone is telling you to cash in your 401, but don't forget if you do mr. obama will get as much as you do ? I say get it away from your company asap and roll it over to your bank (companies can spend it and go broke). The bank is insured, so it'll be safe there. With 11 yrs. your vested at 100 %. Also with it at your local bank you can use it as collateral and borrow against it, but it'll still be there in your name.

Don't be afraid of change. I own a construction company that used to put over 600 houses a year in the ground, not counting the gas stations and mini warehouses.. I parked everything (that I didn't sale) and got a job in the EMA field. Things are looking good now even though I'm not making near as much as I was blasting out the shopping centers and subdivisions, but I have my family and we've all adjusted to the change. I don't think I'll ever go back to large construction, the money was fantastic but so are the perks of this job (I don't work 80 hrs a week anymore)

I guess what I'm trying to say is just because things look like they're crumbling all around you now, that doesn't mean that next week won't bring the best thing in your life.
Keep the faith and push on. Good Luck

I was riding down Herring Road that parallel's Almajack Blvd and saw a big banner saying now hiring. I want to say it was something to do with K-mart. Might be worth you checking out. I will keep my eyes peeled. Also, I remember seeing a now hiring sign in the Lagrange city hall building department on the bulletin board. It has been awile, but it may still be there. Good Luck and I will keep my eyes peeled. My suggestion is to take any kind of job you can get to at least offset the 401(k) damage. There is a fine line though between unemployment and less than $10/hr after taxes. Just keep that in mind.

Im kinda in this boat as well ............... because being self employed in a recession is quite a challenge ;[

Things will get better ............just keep lookin ;)

You might have to sell some stuff to get by ...............but its just stuff and you can always get more stuff :);)

I would do anything I could NOT to cash in a 401K unless it was a last resort. That's basically borrowing money with a 40% interest rate - meaning, you will only get roughly 60% of the money you have in the account once Uncle Sam takes his normal bite plus 10% penalty for gravy on top.

As others have said, circle the wagons and live as cheap as possible. That's about all any of us can do at the moment...
