I don't mind swinging and axe or splitting maul-- over the right kind of wood.

Wood that cracks and separates cleanly.

But when you're dealing with wood that's moist and flexible, and especially when you get to knots in the wood, that's where the blade of your manual tool will stick-in Get caught. THAT is when you appreciate a gasoline engine on a hydraulic log splitter.

Red Oak is pretty good to split as is pine if you're splitting for an outdoor fire pit. The wood I get down here is Live Oak, Pin Oak, and Water Oak. Those aren't maul friendly. I bought one of these splitters off a guy on Craigslist years ago for $600. It's been a blessing. My neighbor just cut down a couple of huge oaks and they're sitting in the empty lot beside me waiting for me and my chainsaw to get busy. My splitter will be getting a good workout soon.

Careful buying from Tractor Supply. I tried to make a return with a receipt, but they demanded my drivers license info for their system. A hour later, I got my faulty item replaced after calling corporate who refused to give management names for me to follow up with. I was told it was a regional manager issue, but no name or number was for the regional manager was provided. The management never followed up. I’ll spend my money where customers are treated better after the sale.
