How many days did you spend on that trip
A good starting place would be to prioritize what you want to see, and the type of vacation you enjoy, another factor is how much of a time frame you have.
Out West is a big place with many different ecosystems and environments from top to bottom. For example. I have spent a month just in Utah and never made it to Salt Lake City and the Uinta mountains.
If you like National Parks you can spend months in just the national parks in Wyoming, Montana, Utah and Colorado.
Do you like to travel to a new place every day or do you like to stay for a few days in one spot and use it as a launching point. Airbnb is good for that.
Do you like to get off the beaten path and have the option to camp a few days? Or do you need to pull into a hotel every evening, the way you travel will probably drive how you set up the trip.
If you have never been to the west and want to see the classic Rocky Mountain views that probably inspired a trip like this, the million dollar highway, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Jackson Glacier National Park corridor will probably give you a lifetime of photographs and memories.
If you are short on time, I would probably skip the middle of the country, fly into Bozeman rent a car or truck and maximize the amount of time I had in the Rockies. (This is how I prefer to travel out west these days, those 2-5 days eaten up in the middle can be better spent on a Rocky Mountain trout stream)

We had 16 days but got back home on day 13. We covered a lot of miles per day.
This will be our first trip and was thinking two weeks mostly driving to a different location each day. But will stop if we see something we want to explore more.
