The USS John Kennedy and USS kitty Hawk are going to the scrapper in Texas. Both were bought for literally 2 cents.

"The U.S. Navy has finally sold off what remains of the former aircraft carriers Kitty hawk and john F Kenndy for scrap, letting them go for one cent each. The service decommissioned both ships more than a decade ago but had kept them in mothballs as various groups attempted to secure them to turn them into museums, and there were evensome brief discussions about returning Kitty Hawk to active duty. The Navy finally struck them from the rolls for good in 2017 and began prepping them to be broken down."

We're going to have to rethink carrier battle groups in the future. It's hard to justify a $12 billion machine that can potentially be killed with a $500,000 missile.

Perhaps smaller carriers without catapult systems, carrying a dozen F-35Cs and a few helicopters.

That's normal with ships that size being scrapped. The gov't can't give them away but are required to sell them. It'll cost the scrappers a lot of money to reduce them down to razor blades and safety pins.

Yes...the article points out the costs for breaking them down are huge.

Kitty Hawk will have to sail from Oregon, around the tip of South America (via Argentina) just to get to Texas. This will take weeks or even month to arrange.

Happens all the time, seen it with aircraft. They get the metal and we don’t have to mess with all of the environmental crap
