Veteran's Groups: Sound off Boot!

Welcome to a chancre mechanic from an aircraft mechanic -- USN 53- 57
Nothing special, just fixed old airplanes, they stopped shooting when they heard I was on my way over there ----
You guys could grow beards! That was special! I am glad those guys wised up when they hear that you were on the way!

I thought I might want to join the VFW when I moved to this area. A guy I worked with who's around 50ish said he was by far the youngest member there. I got the impression from him it was more geared toward the Vietnam era guys exclusively, that chapter at least.

Everybody I've been friends with since moving here is a transplant with military experience. Most the real locals I've encountered around here were not in the military and are not very receptive to outsiders. Talking about where I live, not this website. It's an odd dynamic.
In my part of GA, the vets were mostly drafted for Vietnam or were WWII and Korean vets. Basically, my family elders fall into this category. They were not well off. I'm not trying to say they were screwed. Here, in the SWGA, service, especially enlisted service is not looked upon highly. It was discouraged in high school. I won't mention some of the things I heard. The county and the city leaders have little to no military experience that serves on councils or govern.

It certainly is odd.

There is not one? I did a search. I admit that I am probably mistaken. I found not a single forum post on veteran's groups. Mayhap, it is because there are so many patriots who served in the armed forces, from Georgia, and it is like, meh. I don't think so.

I'll start. I enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman (pecker checker). I volunteered for Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman. I served with the Marines (my entire career) 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Force Reconnaissance Company, and Marine Raiders, all on the West Coast, MCB Camp Pendleton. I served from 1995-2009.

I currently live in South West Georgia. Here, then and now, I felt there was a disdain for those of us who chose to join the ranks. There is the obligatory, "thank you for your service". I say, reply; "thank you for your support", and I mean it.

Are there brothers and sisters who get together every once and a while and raise hell, just as we used to at the barracks? I'm not looking for a charity organization. I'm good. I'm looking for warriors who served. The VFW and the others are all good, but I'm not feeling those just yet. I like the idea of cheap beer, but I don't care about fundraising or the next pot-luck.

I'm just a normal guy now. I do normal stuff, mow the grass and crap. I'm looking to introduce myself to the vets, say hello, and see who is out there.

Swift Silent Deadly

Oorah! I served 2003-2012.
0811 Artillery/ 0842 Counter Battery
0841 designated marksman (before the whole program was lumped into one).

Stationed in Lejeune and then Oki, but spent a lot of my time in the sandbox. Did my 3rd tour with 3rd Recon in Iraq 06-07 in Fallujah AO. All I can say is you guys sure know how to have fun! lol. I also did some time as a combat tracker and HVT escort in Iraq and Afghan.

I get together with a couple of Marines and Army buddies whenever we can. Usually just to talk **** and shoot. I'm game for whatever you have in mind. Maybe a day on the lake?

I served from 1982-2004, USAF Security Forces, I had the privilege to Train Norfolk Fast Teams from 1999-2001 on Thermal Imagers. My 3 older Brothers are Marines, and never let me for get it. Good to have you in ODT!
1981 to 1985 Security Specialist. Ramstein and KI Sawyer.
The best part about being in SAC was the Giant Sword competition. I got to play OPFOR for the team KI was sending.
