What does the death rattle of an auto company sound like?

Turbo cushions top and bottom of the stroke, very easy on insides of engines.
However oil will breakdown faster, and and engine will run at a higher temperature and air intake is critical. So timely service is imperative, and lateness is more damaging.
I suspect that is where the reputation for failure come from.
When I worked at the VW/Audi shop in 07/08 my boss tried his best to sorta rebuild the bottom end of a turbo Passat. The crank journals had been damaged by excessive heat and sludge from using conventional oil. He practically begged the woman to use the full synthetic. But she just kept on getting them cheap Walmart oil changes and using plain old Quaker State.
When she picked it up the last time he told her
"You need to go trade this car in right now on a Honda or Toyota because YOU are NOT VW people." And when he tried to explain that it just got worse. But he was right. The turbo cars have always been more fun to drive but also required more discipline and attention to detail. Kinda like the old 16 valve GTI VWs from the 80s . More fun to drive but interference engines making that timing belt/water pump job WAY more important.

I drove one of Jag's mid size SUVs when I worked at the port . Then I had to get out and give it a once over to check for any dings scratches or other damage. We were supposed to stick those little skinny Post It things next to anything we found . Anyway I got to the fuel door and opened it up and immediately saw the green fuel cap. It was a diesel and I didn't even realize it when I got in and cranked it up.
I really wish this country would loosen up emission regs so that we could get some of the diesel powered vehicles that every other country gets.
Somewhere deep in my phone pics is a pic of two ( that I wasn't supposed to take) of a couple of acres of new Ford Rangers that were about to leave the country. Most were base looking models in regular and extended cab versions. No four doors in the bunch. Most had 4WD stickers on the bed and some were diesel powered. Back then I was asking why we can't get THOSE Rangers over here. Personally I don't need or want a $100K truck. I also don't want all those electronics and options that will most likely break sooner than later. I need a truck for doing truck **** not for showing off.
In India you kind of have a choice between petrol and diesel, most of the cheap stuff and all of the small things like tuktuks are run on gas, while if you have a "nice" car, i.e. a newer Tata, Toyota SUV, Mercedes, etc are mostly diesel. There are some badass vehicles we can't get here that you see over there like the Toyota Fortuner which is like in between a RAV4 and a 4runner, and the Jeep Meridian which is like a baby Wagoneer.

We really miss out on a lot of cool and less expensive cars. I'd freakin LOVE to have an Isuzu VCROSS diesel pickup, they are like 22 Lakh rupees which is like $26k USD and that's a sweet little pickup. Made out of sturdier stuff than one of those hybrid Mavericks.

Your comment reminds me of the 80s when most of the bigger more expensive Mercedes sedans were diesels.
And yeah I wish we could get even half of the cool vehicles other countries get from OUR gig three automakers. Ford does all kinds of cool **** in Europe that we can't get. One of those many times I was browsing through magazines at the St Simons Harris Teeter I saw some car mag with a Focus on the cover and it said it was a turbo diesel. So obviously I HAD to check that out. But if course it was a Euro only model.
