What does the death rattle of an auto company sound like?

Your comment reminds me of the 80s when most of the bigger more expensive Mercedes sedans were diesels.
And yeah I wish we could get even half of the cool vehicles other countries get from OUR gig three automakers. Ford does all kinds of cool **** in Europe that we can't get. One of those many times I was browsing through magazines at the St Simons Harris Teeter I saw some car mag with a Focus on the cover and it said it was a turbo diesel. So obviously I HAD to check that out. But if course it was a Euro only model.
Shoot, Ford doesn't even make CARS for the US Market anymore. They were doing some cool stuff with Focus RS and ST, and the little Fiesta ST

Last summer I bought a 15 Fiesta from CarMax. I had to wait a week for them to ship it from Lithia Springs to Warner Robins. I could've just went and got it myself. That's the same location our raggedy ass Kia Soul came from.
Anyway the sales people in Warner Robins couldn't believe I wanted this car. It has a five speed manual and roll up windows. Oddly enough it has power locks and mirrors. When I got to the lot at least two people asked me if I knew that this car was a manual transmission. I replied with " Yeah I know. That's why I had to wait a week for it to get here. Otherwise I could've just bought the newer automatic model right beside it." But I didn't want the automatic because my brief Fiesta research told me that it was either a CVT or some kinda sport shift option. Both of which are well known problems.
Main point of all this is that my goal was to get the newest yet cheapest AND most basic car I could find. So far I'm pretty happy with it. Aside from having almost no storage compartments and a tiny glove box it's a perfectly reasonable daily driver.
And it's getting a lot harder to avoid the CVT transmissions these days. I looked at an Elantra before this car only to find out they have them now. Pretty much all Nissan have them. And since we've been shifting our own gears here at my house for so long it's not even an issue.
Oh...but the CarMax sales girl couldn't bring my car around for me to test drive it. Had to wait on a service tech to drive it around to me. Sad ain't it?

At least hood rats can't steal it easily.

And the earring wearing valet punks around here can’t park them either. Took my chick to a high dollar steak joint recently and Mr hot **** jumped in my truck like he was Mario damn Andretti at the races. Hoped his little pansy butt out real quick when he saw it had more pedals than he had nuts. 😁 I had to valet my dang self and didn’t even get a tip.

It's getting harder and harder to find something new where you have to row your own gears. At least in the US. I will admit that I've become spoiled by autos. I hop in my old Ranger and get all discombobulated trying to remember to shift

When I was looking to buy my mid-life crisis car, 2009 Challenger RT 6 speed I had to pick one up in Ohio because no one would order me one in GA.

Besides the $10K ADMU they wanted, they told me they wouldn't order it in case it ended up on their lot... even though I was ordering it straight from the factory.

To be fair though, the modern 'automatic' is almost as good as a manual, and even 'manuals' today are part auto.
