It if was an actual Thompson maybe. Those clones are all 70's/early 80's vintage, and generally speaking your first reply was spot on:

The "metal" finger groove grip is not familiar. however, I'll trade sumfin fo it?
It should have some markings somewhere on it. If it's a Volunteer Arms, it's a semi auto that fires from a closed bolt and its fine.
If by some chance it's one of the older Spitfire Carbines on the other hand, it's illegal. The Spitfires fired from an open bolt and were banned as being readily convertible to full auto.
I'm afraid not. It's a family heirloom piece of crap!
