What is this "Thompson" thing

always a couple of old guys at the gun shows, they always have old ww1 and2 stuff, they may be able to tell you more...

It if was an actual Thompson maybe. Those clones are all 70's/early 80's vintage, and generally speaking your first reply was spot on:

thats just an old piece of crap.

Quality on those things was pretty spotty at best.
 
It is. No selector. Ive only recently started researching these things. The trigger doesn't look like any of the images I've seen.

It should have some markings somewhere on it. If it's a Volunteer Arms, it's a semi auto that fires from a closed bolt and its fine.

If by some chance it's one of the older Spitfire Carbines on the other hand, it's illegal. The Spitfires fired from an open bolt and were banned as being readily convertible to full auto.
