What Is Your Favorite Gun for Self Defense?

Someone asked me that age old question that we all get asked, "What is your favorite gun for self defense?"...
That is such a broad question. There a millions of answers...

My answer:

1-- It's got to be a gun that I like shooting enough to regularly practice with it.
Full disclosure: Sure, I have carried guns I don't really like shooting. They are less than ideal. So if you're asking about my ideal carry gun, that wouldn't be it.

2- It has to be a size and shape that I will actually carry.
In my lifestyle, one gun cannot possibly fit all of the different circumstances in which I might carry a handgun, so I actually have two favorite carry guns. One is for more or less daily concealed carry, and one is for risky situations where I'll either openly carry or I will conceal it after dressing around the weapon, because it's physically a bigger & heavier gun.

3-- After conditions #1 and #2 above are satisfied, only then will I look at caliber.
For me, I want a cartridge that fits the gun size and weight and ergonomics, so that I can shoot it very rapidly and control it even one-handed.
This means 9 mm or .38 +p in a compact gun,
and more powerful cartridges like the .40, .45 ACP or 357 magnum would be reserved for heavier guns with longer barrels and hand-filling grips.

So many different situations. Can’t go wrong with the 12g self defense shotgun but I have a few hand guns scattered around the house. On person in the summer usually a LCP 380 or NAA 22mag in my pocket cause they are easy to conceal. Once it gets cool I usually go with a Canik TP9SF elite subcompact or beretta 92 or even a full-size 1911. Kinda depends on what I’m wearing and where I’m going. There is nothing in the woods I need to worry about so I tend to carry my NAA 22mag with bird shot for the snakes in the warm months.
You can go wrong with a shotgun, especially if you have to reload.

Nice to see so many 357 sig fans. If I walked out the door knowing 100% that I was going to get in a gun fight that day, I’d have to choose an XD45 for whatever reason i shoot it the most accurately. My everyday carry comfort zone is a Glock 19 or 32. To me, it’s the best balance of conceal-ability , stopping power, control-ability and firepower.
