I am curious to know how he was able to produce and sell bullets at the height of the war while everyone was on rations. Metals of all kind were gold to the government. I really think there is an interesting story to be learned.

Maybe it had something to do with the USA being attacked by the Japs. Any and all ammo was going for the War efforts so people had to reload and stock up ammo to protect the Home Land.
That's my guess

Older relatives used to say that .22lr ammo was available at the beginning of WW II but within a few months they were gone. They bought what few boxes they could afford because a lot of their hunting was with rimfire rifles: rabbits, squirrels, possums and raccoons. My granddad used to kill hogs with a .22lr to the brain before cutting their throat and butchering them. Fresh pork is so wonderful it is hard to find anything close to that now.
