What's up with people using a knife to cut firewood? Why not break the wood?

Battoning with a quality knife doesn't hurt it, Chinese imprted junk may not fair so well though. On a known overnight trip I carry a small hatchet but when hunting or on a day hiking trip I don't want the added weight. Should things go wrong and I am forced to spend a night in the cold you can bet I will split wet wood to get to the dry inner if needed to get a fire and I will be using a quality knife and never even think about it breaking. May not be the best tool for the job but it has worked for me for several years, never snapped a blade, and battoning doesn't seem to dull or hurt the edge like chopping would.

I have about 35 or closer to 40 years behind a machete and they have always done what I needed (except a Chinese pos I bent and threw away in high school) primitive peoples all around the world use machetes in their day to day and they git er done

Look up the " Stanley Fubar " for $19, nice entry tool

That FUBAR looks like it will dig, chop, open things. Looks pretty useful. Maybe get rid of that handle and wrap a crapload of 550 cord on it. I must get my hands on one and test it
