When REMINGTON stood proudly for MADE IN THE USA quality…

So lately I have been on a synthetic stock/short barreled and threaded hunting rifle kick.
Mainly TIKKAS. I’m also going down the ROKSLIDE rabbit hole about using smaller calibers with less recoil for deer hunting, using the modern high bc heavy for caliber bullets like the 77 TMK.
However, I am also into older things that have stood the test of time like the .308 and .260 calibers.
So, I’m kinda a weird mixture of old and new I guess…you know, I’m into AR’s, PCC’s and M4’s.
But at the same time I love my 100 year old COLT SAA’s, BROWNING shotguns and DAKOTA 76.
Anyway, I traded a couple of high end modern weapons lately for several guns intended to be sold for cash…it seems that’s the only way to get anything over $1k sold these days.
One of the guns I took as “ trade fodder” for resale was the REMINGTON BDL .243 below.
She was not in bad shape but I couldn’t resist getting out my FLITZ and shining her up a little.
I’m glad I did. There was lots of surface rust that wasn’t apparent…and with just a little TLC the old girl shined right up!
Just handling this beautiful example of American craftsmanship made me both happy and sad…
But I digress lol. Anybody out there that can make sense of the REMINGTON serial number/barrel markings enough to give me the year of manufacture ?
That “A” that precedes the serial number makes me think this is an early gun…but it seems the A was used for several different years?
I also would like any REMINGTON guys comments on condition/value. I have no clue.
I need to hurry up and move this beauty before I get even more attached lol.

It would make a nice birth year gun for someone. Almost 50 now!

Looks like “X” and “Q” on the barrel. Which should be December 1978??
Kinda weird tho…”P” is 1967. And “R” is 1968??

I have the Remington 700 BDL left handed in 7Mag I bought new in 83

Some letter codes are re-used. At times, you have to use a combination of letter codes and features to properly ID.

The year code Q was used in 1978, and again in 1996.

The skip-line checkering pattern on your rifle came out in the 1970's, and debuted on specific models in various years. For instance, the BDL Varmint went to skip-line checkering in 1978.

The "A" prefix is commonly seen in late 70's Remington 700's, so I'd say yours is a 1978.
