After doing the (seemingly mandatory) ios26 update the old phone to new phone transfer finally finished.

Now it has to download all the apps again, then update many of them, The long wait continues.

The oddest thing to us was that adding a phone for our son and "upgrading" three other phones ended up with a lower total monthly bill than with just three old phones. I know we're paying for the phones over the next couple of years, but it's odd how low the prices can go when they want to hang onto a customer, and that we were wiling to forego the newest phone.

I know right. My bill went down $14 a month for upgrading

This ios26 update you guys mention. Give me some more info. I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max with ios 18.6.2 or somethng similar and it says it is up to date. Thanks.

I believe the phone has to be 15 or newer. The hardware can’t support it on the older phones

Usually free with an upgrade. The new iPhone are usually always free if you return a phone and upgrade
