Someone please educate me as to why people feel the need to shoot up in the air when they hear coyotes howling ?

Why do people think they need to shoot in the air ?

With the hopes of it coming down and hitting one! 
I assume that with most being heard at night shooting level in the direction of the howling would be fairly dangerous, I wouldn't recommend it, sky-ward either.
Probably the same reasons our dads always yelled at strays... Getonoutahere!
Maybe it will fall and.Oh thats not right.Who does that?shoots in the air.
Where does this take place? Just need to know where to stay away from.
Maybe its just a south Ga thing . It has happened to me for the 3rd time tonight .I was sitting there in a peaceful field calling yotes ,and they are talking back then I see 2 coming in with the thermal from about 800 yards away when it happened .boom boom boom .The yotes get gone in a hurry ,and I did not happen to be the direction they choose to go.. They managed to accomplish messing up a chance to get rid of a few .
You need to be thankful they shot up in the air then. How do you know they shot up ??
