Wichita lineman (or Ga Power) - my son is interested in this field, how does he get on?

Had a good friend that was a Southern Company(GA Power) lineman for years.....hard work for sure!! To what the guy said earlier....I guess they do their own training....It's hard to get on there....I suppose it's the same today....BUT...if he sticks with it, it has rewards!!....until there is a big storm somewhere....he's gone in 2-3 hours.....there was an issue about college, as I remember....lineman was about as high as you could go in the company without a college degree....

Ga power is switching over to contractors it seems .

We recently had some work done at the lines serving our house and some of the folks that came out were ga power employees and another day it was contractors .

The ga power employees were complaining that they couldn’t get workers and that their location was down from 16 linemen to 4 .

I know someone who works at ga power ,
Doing something in their health and safety dept or something , lemme see if I can get in touch and ask where to start .

Although I’m sure ga power or southern company webpage will have some link for careers .

My son is interested in becoming a lineman. It looks like the only way to do this is to attend one of the lineman schools for a couple of months for $12,000 - $20,000 in tuition. Anyone know if "lineman school" is a requirement? And if so, is it worth the cost of admission?

Fact. I was just about to post this…

Best way to get on at Ga Power now is through the lineman school in Trenton or Dalton…. Most of the new hires in NW region are coming from there now. I’ve been at Ga Power for 25 years. I see them come and go…
