My serial number is 198541 Winchester says manufactured 1953. My rifle has a grooved receiver. Wasn’t supposed to be available until 1954 starting with serial number205—. Any help ?

I’ve seen a lot of overlap with features on firearms from many companies. Colt, S&W, Winchester, Remington, etc.
It’s possible that it’s a late-1953, or that Winchester didn’t add the featured on 1 January.

. Thank you for the info. Winchester always makes it tough.
Remington is even worse, since the only way to date most of them is by the code on the barrel. Since it's always possible that the barrel isn't original, it leave you with some doubts.
