I've read much on the net about running steel case ammo and then when you go back to brass case there are problems...

I have never had any issues with wolf steel ammo in my ar's. It is dirty and you will have to clean you rifle good. I have ran steel in mags and brass in other mags same range trip never an issues. This is my experience. Great plinking and range ammo

When you say dirty did you see a lot of gum in the chamber area or just fouling?
