Slowly dismantling an old barn. Believe most to be oak but wondering which type of oak. Especially interested to see if anyone can tell me what the reddish colored wood is. Thanks for your opinions.

Bit hard to tell, rough sawn as it is and slightly blurry but does appear to be red oak. For me personally if I'm trying to identify old wood I normally bring a little low angle block plane with me and shave off one little flat spot. That'll show a fresh cut, clean, easier to see the grain and determine the species. Also try pressing a thumb nail into it, rough gauge of hardness.

I also somewhere around here do have a wood identification book with detailed pics of about every known species of wood on the planet which helps when trying to identify obscure species. I use a fair amount of exotics for instrument building so I have some really strange stuff sitting around.

First pic looks like red oak, second also looks like red, or maybe white oak, third pic looks like oak as well, but almost too blurry to tell.

Id is easiest with a picture of the end of the board, Clean it up with your pocket knife. Take a picture.

Carver hit it, chestnut much more likely than oak.

Red oak in particular is not very durable in the weather.
