A flash-bang goes off BOOM! You are now blind and deaf. As you vision restores the gas hits you and your eyes tear up, then snot pours from your nose. Your lungs are burning and you cough like crazy.

From this disadvantage your plan is what exactly? Do you need a phone booth to change into Superman?

Did Superman always need a phone booth?

Best thing to do is just let the shooter shoot?
Is that really what I'm hearing?

The best thing is for your loved ones to survive. If you can survive also, thats a plus. If in the process of surviving, you can stop the carnage, that's great too, but survival is key. As a retired Fire Chief, the first thing I always told my FireFighters (Volunteers, but that doesnt matter) was, it does nobody any good, if in the process of responding, and handling an emergeny, you put yourself in the posistion of becoming another victim. If you take your carry gun out of the drawer, and put it on thinking, today I will be a hero, you are setting yourself up for disaster. For one thing, a police officer isn't going to stand there and say, oh you have a drawn gun, are you a good guy, or a bad guy? Maybe I'm all wrong on this, but when I take my Grandkids out of the safety of their parents home, I'm accepting the responsibility to get them home again.

I think gapoppy is right on. First, protect your loved ones and get them to safety if possible. Second, protect yourself. Stopping the bad guy or helping others is tertiary in importance to me. Life isn't like the movies where you can tell someone to "stay down" while you go play hero. I'm no good to my family if I'm dead. We're talking about a fluid situation here, so if at some point the bad guy turns in your direction, everything is off the table and you may have to stand your ground in order to get out alive, but the point is to get out alive by any means necessary.

Pretty much sums up some opinions here. The shooter was targeting people trying to leave first. That would have blocked the exits and he could have killed at his leisure. Then more would have died. I hope that under the SHTF pressure I would have performedAs I have trained, and if warranted, I would have the fortitude to engage the threat. I suspect that engaging the threat would be the better way to protect my family rather then HOPE for a malfunction, as in this case. Not to mention, I doubt I would be able to hold my head high in public again if I simply abandoned my fellow man, for the excuse that I was protecting "me and mine"This is not a case where a group of thugs were fighting it out and my involvement would be needless, this was a case where my fellow man was being slaughtered.

If in the process of getting my loved ones out of danger, I am percieved to be a Coward, thats a tiltle I will wear with no regrets whatsoever. I must say, I am somewhat relieved to know that John Wayne, Audie Murphy and Sgt.York are alive and well.

Well it is starting to look like the greatest generation will just die off with the baby boomers.
Get me and mine and get out.
Welcome to the new America.
Not me...

Is that the generation that was too busy drinking and smoking themselves to death while their kids ran rampant in the 60's and 70's? The same generation that had the highest desertion rate in any war in the 20th century? I have respect for most of them, but I have a problem with people looking at them as the all good doing angels they were made out to be.

I gotta protect me and mine. Hell with them jews. As long as them Nazis is killing them I'm they ain't killing me..

Screw the Phillipines, Japan can have them.

Hey! I ain't runnin' into no tower, let them run out if they wanna live.

Dude! Your house is on fire...JUMP! I'll be out here if you want me.
