The responses are too black and white in my opinion. Your title asks if we are capable. Yes, I'm very capable. Would I have acted? Depends. Depends on a lot of factors. Where is my wife and kids? Are they safe? Do I have adequate cover? Do my wife and kids have adequate cover? and so one and so on and so on.....

Bottom line is you have to be prepared for every situation. You also have to decide WHY am I carrying a gun? If you want to stop the bad guy, go join the police force. If you want to protect your family, then the weapon should remain in your possession at the ready until your family or yourself is threatened.

Just my opinion. Having a weapon is half the battle....

tacos, i would have done everything in my power to protect my wife. if a clean and unobstructed shot presented itself i would like to think i would have took it, but keeping my wife safe is my priority.

depending on the situation maybe fire a few shots in the air or the ground if i dont have a clean shot hoping that he would retreat knowing there is an armed person in the theater.

Ya'll please keep in mind,,, if you are ever in a situation (and I hope your not) and the person has on a vest. The pelvic area is ALOT easier to hit that a moving head. You break down his pelvis and he's on the ground. Plus chances are you will get that famorial (spelling sux) artery and he's toast.

How much tear gas training do you do?

I have been exposed to CS gas a few times and can tell you it sucks. Trying to engage an enemy with superior firepower, with a pistol, while fighting the effects of CS, in a frenzied crowd, is a recipe for disaster.

No amount of paper punching will prepare you for a situation like this.

Apparently you didn't read my second post on page 4.
Why don't you come to one of our advanced courses where we practice impaired vision shooting & see if after you leave you still consider it "paper punching".

Until they allow training schools to start shooting inmates on deathrow or pigs that are walking on their hind feet to get the full effect we have to improvise as best we can to simulate the stress of actual combat.
A good training class helps to teach & ingrain good fundamentals while exposing the areas that need work.
If you have a better idea on how to build proficiency w/o having to go to Kabul, I'd love to hear it.

Keep in mind he had a ballistic lid and throat protector only shot would have been right between the eyes.

Wouldn't have helped him much. You're talking about a piece of metal traveling 1200+ feet per second, slamming into your body. Even with a vest, it feels like someone hit you with a bat. The helmet wouldn't have sustained a 9mm+p at close range, and surely not the "throat protector" he was wearing.

If I was able to see him I would be shooting. Makes me think that I'm only going to be carrying a .45 from now on. Be on the lookout for a G26 for sale! Everyone bringing up the flash and the gas, yes you are right but if I'm able to see and I'm in range, I'm shooting. This has nothing to do with being a hero. And yes, I am a veteran and I do have training before any of you experts start trying to tell me how stupid I am.
