If you notice in this video, ABC improperly calls the Blackhawk Assault vest purchased a “bullet proof vest” when the screen clearly shows the make of the assault vest from Blackhawk and even displays “Assault Vest” on the screen. It makes me question whether Holmes was truly wearing body armor or an armored helmet.

So it appears that the guy didn't have any body armor on at all. So all of the "you'd have to hit him between the eyes" talk is neutered now.

The problem with this discussion is that the average CCL holder has no idea what a failure drill is and has never received defensive training. Some of the guys here may be prior service or LEO, and have been shot at before, others may be enthusiasts who take defensive carry seriously and have sought out training, but the average guy with a permit is probably neither. Arguments like this only bolster the idea that carrying is an automatic license to be a bad ass. Carrying is a responsibility and every person who chooses to do so should know their own limitations.

Not necessarily. Until the investigation is made public, we won't know exactly what he was wearing. I won't be surprised to find out that the media mistook a tactical vest for body armor though. Heck, CNN can hardly tell the difference between a shotgun and an AK. No matter what he was wearing, it doesn't change the fact that most people aren't prepared for this kind of situation and wouldn't know what to do IF he had been wearing body armor. The type of armor would have made a big difference as well. Plates vs. soft armor or just a tac vest? We'll have to wait and see. The post incident reports will definitely be interesting and good food for thought. Hopefully it causes us to take carrying more seriously and maybe even spur some to seek out training from qualified instructors.

I'm not saying never "take out" s shooter. Pick any school shooting for example and you will see a great argument for engaging the shooter. A crowded theater presents its own challenge, however.

It is against the law to yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater because of the tight quarters and panic mentality of any crowd. This is hardly the environment to play hero. I'm not saying do nothing either. If a shot presents itself, I take it but my primary mission is protecting my wife.

What exactly are you protecting her with, your skills at exiting a dark area?
Not trivializing your experience or service, but I keep hearing that from eveybody..."protect me and mine".
From the reports it appears those were the exact targets he was seeking out, people exiting.

It seems the BEST action may have been to just lie down in the dark and play dead.

hah exactly. I wont shoot at someone that I cant see or other people could be hurt or killed cause I dont have a clear shot. If I cant flee ill lie in wait for him to make his way towards me. No other option really .
