Ok guys,

I have gathered some funds together and I am now in the market for a entry level AR.Looking to spend about $500..but may be a bit flexible..just depends on the goodies.Price may be a little on the low end,but I have my eye on a used Rock River setup at my local shop for cheap.Let me know what you have.

May also be interested in an AK..or other tactical..but mainly an AR setup.

If you can get an Used Rock River from you local shop for $500 then buy it. Other then that, save up a little more and buy something along the lines of a Delton or buy a lower and decent upper and piece it together. The only thing you are likely to get on here for $500 is a beat up sportical or sport model which I wouldn't buy even if someone else was paying for it.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advise. I have more wiggle room in price, but don't want to get in over my head..especially with Christmas around the corner. Sold my .45 to make room for a SKS project..but that did not work out..so I have some funds to toss around toward an complete AR or AR build. I have been told by many to stay away from the sportical type models, which I plan to, but my question is why?

They are junk, they are cutting a lot of corners, are not in milspec. That upper without the forward assist and dust cover isn't cheaper then a standard one so the are cutting corners in lots of other areas. Also, you are looking at a gun that if you decide to sell it you are going to have a hell of a time because no one is going to want it. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a decent AR, around $900-1000 can get you a very good AR. Figure with some shopping you can get a complete upper for ~$300, a little cheaper if you build it yourself, but unless you have someone who has done it before then I would spend the extra and get it complete. After that $300-500 gets you an upper and BCG. My vote would be a BCM upper, carbine or midlength gas system, just a standard upper no rails, can add those later, and a decent milspec BCG. Round out the build with your particular odds and ends and at around $1,000 you have a rifle that is on par with a $1500-2000 build. For a better idea of the durability of the BCM rifles look up Pat Roger's Filthy 14.

Look up Plum Crazy Lowers, (complete lower for ~ $150 to you via your FFL), and somebody's decent upper for $400 or less, and you are good to go. I have built several using the Plum Crazy's, and they are a tight fit on most uppers. Great results too!
