Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to wait a day or two and see if I can find something in a private sale - if not I'll head to a local store and pickup a NEF/CVA or other variant. I appreciate all the feedback!
NEF does not make the single shot rifles any longer. I have owned a couple NEF single shot rifles and don't let the budget price fool you. They are not cheap guns. They are very solid and accurate. Single shot rifles are some of the simplest guns ever made, and will last beyond a lifetime, just like their shotgun counterparts. They are also very accurate, in my experience. That's why I bought the CVA youth hunter in .243 for my son. It is safe, simple, and well made. The barrel looks outstanding. Though I have not shot it yet, I expect it to be more than adequate in the accuracy dept. It is compact, and light (but not too light). If it is half as good as the NEF rifles I have owned, it will be a perfect first deer rifle. Good luck
